Pasta de Conchos, Explotation and Insecurity: The families of the miners of Santa Rosita,
Coahuila have a sit-in in the DF, where they
demand of the Secretary of Labor the search and
rescue of the bodies of the 63 miners who were
trapped after an explosion on February 19, 2006
inside a mine known as the Pasta de Conchos
Mine. The relatives argue that the owners of
the Industrial Minera Mexico company do not comply
with mine security standards and maintain a
framework of corruption with the labor
authorities, which has generated a greater risk of
fatal accidents to the miners, costing human
lives. The rescue efforts have been stopped for
months by orders of the company and the
government, which is why the relatives of the
victims think that the bodies were only a short
distance away from being rescued. This would
confirm their assertions that what killed the
miners was the company's irresponsibility and
eagerness for greater profit, and not an
unforeseeable accident. The mining industry has
been a hard contradiction for Mexico and other
countries where it operates. While for a few it
generates multimillionaire gains, the legions of
workers it condemns to a life of low wages and
deplorable conditions.
